For the fifth consecutive year, the KWPN leads the world as the best jumper studbook--an outstanding achievement! Equally outstanding is that a Dutch horse once again tops the list, and that horse is no other than the Olympic gold medal winner Hickstead (Hamlet x Jomara ster pref by Ekstein, breeder: B. van Schijndel). Of course, all the horses represented on the Olympic podium in Hong Kong benefit the KWPN, for half-brothers Ninja la Silla and Authentic--both Guidam offspring--also count in the studbook ranking. Ninja (d.Olympica by Lys de Darmen, bred by Stoeterij Van Uitert-Huijsmans) ranks eighth in the world for 2008 and stands second among KWPN horses. Beezie Madden's mount Authentic (d.Gerlinda by Katell xx, breeders: G.H. and H. Morsink), who won the Olympic team gold and individual bronze in Hong Kong, ranks 17th.

KWPN victories in Hong Kong naturally affected the world ranking lists for 2008. However, the 2007 Horse of the Year Okidoki (Jodokus x Kentucky s.Topas, breeder: O. Boonstra) did not have to travel to China to achieve his eleventh place standing. Okidoki's last competition of the year was in Aachen, where he placed second with his team.

The top six horses from each studbook are calculated in the studbook rankings. In addition to Hickstead, Ninja la Silla, Okidoki, and Authentic, two other KWPN horses figure in the studbook standings. These are Eurocommerce Milano (Indorado x Iloma by Beaujolais, breeder: Js. Haandrikman) (21) and Primeval Wings (Lexicon x Jersey s.Columbus, bred by the Morsink family) (22), ridden by Gert Jan Bruggink. Because of these six top horses, the KWPN ranks number one among jumper studbooks. The other top ten studbooks are the Westfalen, Holsteiner Verband, Hanoverian Verband, Belgian BWP, Selle Francais, Oldenburg, Zangersheide, Swedish, and Belgian SBS.

Second Again in Dressage

The Hanoverian Verband tops the dressage studbook rankings. The KWPN ranks second again; however, this year it edged even closer to number one. The approved stallion Painted Black, the top KWPN dressage horse, climbed three places in the rankings from last year and now stands at number five. Last year, Painted Black was the only Dutch dressage horse in the top ten; this year, he is joined by his contemporaries Parzival and Pop Art (Amsterdam x Jodyprinses keur s.Cabochon, breeder: E. Korenberg), who rank sixth and seventh, respectively. Parzival (Jazz x Fidora ster pref prest s.Ulft, breeder: J.D. Beijer-de Kleijn) did not have to compete in Hong Kong to earn his standing. His excellent results in Aachen and Rotterdam were more than enough to earn him sixth place in the dressage rankings. Seventh ranked Pop Art did exceptionally well in Florida shows. Only ten years old, Ravel (Contango x Hautain pref s.Democraat, breeder: H. de Man) surprised many at the Olympics with his outstanding fourth place finish, for he had no prior international experience and had only shown in a few competitions in California and Florida. Tied for 15th place in the WBFSH dressage horse rankings, the strong gelding is the fourth horse calculated in the KWPN's standing.

Although Exquis Nadine (TCN Partout x Charites ster pref prest s.Roemer, breeder: G. Vervoorn) could not top Ravel in the Olympic or in the WBFSH dressage standings, the mare indeed performed outstandingly in Hong Kong. She shined in the Freestyle and contributed to the team silver. She is the fifth KWPN horse calculated in the WBFSH studbook rankings. The sixth Dutch horse is Jeff (Jetset-D x Fegasus-Utopia keur sport(dres) s.Pretendent, breeder: E. Dokter), ridden by Stefanie Peters.

Eventing

The Irish top the eventing rankings. France, with its two studbooks, ranks second and third. The KWPN climbed from eleventh place in 2007 to eighth place this year, besting even the Holsteiner Verband with its Olympic champion Marius Voigt-Logistik. Blom’s Oncarlos' (Faram x Dolca keur prest s.Oldenburg, breeder: J. Eefting) second place finish in Aachen and 15th place in the Hong Kong Olympics put him in 22nd place on the world ranking list. The other five eventers that contributed to the KWPN's eighth place standing are Drivetime (Rolls Royce x Etronora s.Zuidhorn, breeder: J. Dongen), Gregor (Calvados x Pretty Woman s.Aloubé), Van Schijndel’s Owaola ster sport(jump) (Indoctro x Ewaola ster pref s.Joost, breeder: B.H.D. Nijhuis), Misty Brown (Damocles x Fabiola s.Pion, breeder: C.F. van Mook), and Road Runner (Havel x Kianda ster s.Amethist, breeder: A.W.J. Vlaskamp).
