The finals of the North American Spalding Labs Young Event Horse Championships took place September 9th in Chicago and ended with an overwhelming success for one farm’s breeding program. Columbia, MO-based New Spring Farm, owned and operated by Cheryl and Timothy Holekamp, produced the Champion 4yr old and Champion 5yr old of this year, and also the Reserve Champion 4yr old. The 5yr old Trakehner Asterion, a grey gelding by New Spring Farm’s own Olympian Windfall out of Astra by Amethyst II, won with his owner Samantha Clark (Ontario, Canada) in the saddle. Their total score of 84.21 points put them ahead of second placed La Dee Ta with Tera MacDonald (83.47 points) and Denira (Hanoverian mare by De Niro) with Martha Lambert on 3rd place (81.92 points).
In the 4yr old division, British Olympic Gold Medalist Leslie Law presented New Spring Farm’s chestnut Trakehner mare Amarna (by Amestyst II – Avignon I) and took the lead with 81.48 points over another New Spring Farm-bred Trakehner: Project Runway (by Windfall – Sacred Indian) and his 16yr old rider Maxance McManamy, who had come the long way from California, scored a total of 79.31 and placed 2nd in this group.
