All winners were presented with certificates and elegant Longines timepieces. In lieu of the live award ceremony that could not take place this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, a video with the winning horse breeders was produced.

The winning breeder in Dressage is the late Inge Bastian, who was represented by her husband Günter Bastian, for breeding the 15-year old Oldenburg-registered mare Weihegold by Don Schufro/Sandro Hit. Weihegold is ridden by Isabell Werth, and within the FEI competition year the pair has produced eight international tests resulting in six wins and two second places. With a disrupted events calendar this year, most recently they won CDI4* Achleiten/Germany Grand Prix and Grand Prix Special. They also won the Grand Prix of the Longines-FEI World Cup Amsterdam (CDI-W) in January of this year.

Inge Bastian has been breeder of the year before, for breeding Wiehegold (2017). She and her husband also owned the dam of the renown Don Schufro, sire of Weihegold. In nine consecutive years Don Schufro has placed in the Top 12 of the WBFSH Dressage Sire Rankings, showing the strong influence he has had on dressage sport horse breeding.

Marleen Woertmann is the daughter of the deceased Dutch breeder Anton Woertmann, who won the Jumping Breeders Awards for breeding the KWPN gelding Denver by Albuehren’s Memphis/Chico’s Boy which was born at his yard 12 years ago. Denver has had an outstanding competition year with British Holly Smith who has only ridden him for one year. The pair placed third at the Longines FEI World Cup Amsterdam CSI5*-W in the Two-phase  and Drand Prix Table A respectively. This was the only World Cup show they were able to compete this year, again due to a disrupted show calendar resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic.

When Longines and WBFSH visited Marleen Woertmann she said: ”I do not think my father thought he would ever breed a foal like this. It is an honour to my father, an honour to his work and I am very happy to receive this award.”

The Dutch couple Jannie and Johan Schurink are the winners of the Eventing Breeders Awards for breeding the KWPN gelding Don Quidam. The 12-year-old is by Quidam/Amthist, and he has successfully competed under the saddle of Australian Kevin McNab. In September the pair placed 2nd in the CCI4* Burnham Market/Great Britain, and they also placed 2nd in the CCI4*-S Barroca d'Alva/Portugal in March of this year. Kevin and Don Quidam had a strong chemistry from the start, and Kevin describes Don Quidam as a horse with a reserved but strong personality, with a calibre that is demonstrated by the champion Don Quidam has become.

At our visit Johan Schurink said: ”We are hobby breeders. Don Quidam was born here, and it is amazing that a horse we have bred becomes No. 1 in the world. It is a great thing for my wife because he has put a lot of work into the horses, and she deserves this award.”
